The Liberal Arts Associate in Arts Degree with an Area of Emphasis in Arts and Humanities emphasizes the content of communication as well as the form and should provide an understanding of the psychological basis and social significance of communication. Students will be able to assess communication as the process of human symbolic interaction. Students will also develop skills in the areas of reasoning and advocacy, organization, accuracy, reading and listening effectively. Students will be able to integrate important concepts of critical thinking as related to the development of analysis, critical evaluation, to reason inductively and deductively that will enable them to make important decisions regarding their own lives and society at large. To earn this Associate Degree students must complete: 1)All major course requirements with a grade of C or better; 2)Cypress College Native General Education requirements; California State University General Education Breadth requirements (CSU GE Breadth) or IGETC General Education requirements; 3) Fulfillment of all graduation requirements, to include local requirements of a minimum of one (1) unit of coursework approved for Physical Activity and Health and three (3) units of coursework approved for Social Justice, Equity and Sustainability 4)any elective courses to complete a minimum of 60 units; and, have a minimum GPA of 2.0. This degree requires a total of 18 units in the major, in addition to general graduation requirements.

A student who completes this program (degree/certificate) will

Students will demonstrate effective oral and written communication and critical thinking skills to articulate ideas to others, by incorporating knowledge of aesthetic worth to formulate value judgments Students will develop knowledge, skills, and judgment around human communication that facilitate their ability to work collaboratively with others. Such skills could include communication competencies such as managing conflict, understanding small group processes, active listening, appropriate self-disclosure, etc. Students will be able to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
