Division: Social Sciences
PROGRAM CODE: 2A42386
The Social Work and Human Services Associate in Arts Degree for Transfer, also called the Social Work and Human Services AA-T Degree, prepares students to transfer to CSU campuses that offer bachelor's degrees in Collaborative Health and Human Services, Criminal Justice, Human Services, Social Work, and Sociology. Through this program, students will gain knowledge of human service delivery systems, communication skills for working with individuals, groups, and diverse populations, case management techniques, and will gain hands-on field experience in one or more human service agencies. The program will also encourage students to think critically about societal conditions that contribute to the need for social services. This program is designed for transfer to complete a bachelor's degree in Social Work or Human Services. Students completing the bachelor's degree are trained to provide value-based services for families in need of temporary social, health, and economic assistance. State and county agencies, non-profits, and private providers of services, social workers, psychologists, and medical personnel work in this field. Ed Code Section 66746-66749 states students earning the Social Work AA-T degree will be granted priority for admission as a Social Work major to a local CSU, as determined by the CSU campus to which the student applies. The following is required for all AA-T or AS-T degrees, and there are no additional graduation requirements: (1) Completion of 60 semester units or 90 quarter units that are eligible for transfer to the California State University, including both of the following: (a) The Intersegmental General Education Transfer Curriculum (IGETC) or the California State University General Education – Breadth Requirements. (b) A minimum of 18 semester units or 27 quarter units in a major or area of emphasis, as determined by the community college district. (2) Obtainment of a minimum grade point average of 2.0. (3) ADTs also require that students must earn a C or better in all courses required for the major or area of emphasis. The P (Pass) grade is an acceptable grade for courses in the major only if the P is defined to be equivalent to a C or better. This degree requires a total of 28-31 units in the major, in addition to other degree requirements.
