The Oceanography Associate in Science Degree (AS in Oceanography) is designed to provide students with a comprehensive introduction to the field. Students with a degree in Oceanography may pursue careers as a(n) aquarist, boat captain, chemical oceanographer, climatologist, environmental advocate, marine archaeologist, marine biologist, marine economist, marine geologist / geophysicist, marine lawyer, marine policy specialist, ocean engineer, ocean fisheries specialist, ocean resource management, ocean technician, physical oceanographer, or teacher. While at least a baccalaureate degree is recommended preparation for those considering professional careers, completion of this curriculum will demonstrate commitment to the field and provide comprehensive preparation for further academic study through upper-division course work. Students should consult a counselor, the Transfer Center and the catalog of the transfer college or university to plan a specific program of study to meet the college or university's requirements. To earn an AS in Oceanography students must complete the following requirements: (1) a minimum of 36-38 semester units or 54-57 quarter units in the Oceanography major with a grade of C or better; AP(Pass) grade is an acceptable grade for a course in the major only if the P is defined to be equivalent to a C or better (2) Cypress College Local General Education requirements or the California General Education Transfer Curriculum (Cal-GETC) requirements; (3) any electives need to reach 60 semester or 90 quarter units of CSU transferable coursework; and (4) have an overall GPA of 2.0. This degree requires a total of 36-38 units in addition to other graduation requirements.
