As globalization continues to increase interconnectedness and facilitate cross-cultural exchange, proficiency in a second language confers a distinct competitive advantage in the workforce. This Japanese Associate in Arts Degree program equips students with the linguistic and cultural competencies necessary to navigate intercultural communication in Japanese as engaged global citizens effectively. The curriculum is designed to establish a robust foundation in Japanese language proficiency, fostering the development of all four language modalities - listening, speaking, reading, and writing - while simultaneously promoting a nuanced understanding and appreciation of Japanese culture. Successful completion of the Japanese Associate in Arts Degree program facilitates the attainment of students’ career and transfer objectives, unlocking a plethora of opportunities. Moreover, students acquire invaluable skills in managing cultural diversity in both personal and professional contexts, enabling them to communicate effectively with Japanese speakers. Upon completion of this program, students will possess a comprehensive understanding of Japanese culture and its people and will be capable of effectively communicating in spoken Japanese, utilizing appropriate linguistic registers, stylistic conventions, and levels of formality across diverse contexts. To earn an Associate Degree in Japanese students must complete: 1)All major course requirements with a grade of C or better; 2)Cypress College Local General Education requirements or California General Education Transfer Curriculum (Cal-GETC) requirements 3)any elective courses to complete a minimum of 60 units; and, have a minimum GPA of 2.0. This degree requires a total of 20 units in the major, in addition to general graduation requirements.

Program Student Learning Outcomes:

OUTCOME 1: Demonstrate effective oral and written communication and critical thinking skills to articulate ideas to others, by incorporating knowledge of aesthetic worth to formulate value judgments in Japanese. Students will develop knowledge, skills, and judgment around human communication that facilitate their ability in Japanese to work collaboratively with others. Such skills could include communication competencies such as managing conflict, understanding small group processes, active listening, appropriate self-disclosure, etc. Students will be able to communicate effectively orally and in writing in Japanese with 70% accuracy.

OUTCOME 2: Apply critical thinking, problem-solving, and information competency skills to analyze Japanese texts, conduct research on Japanese topics, and solve real-world problems involving Japanese language and culture with 70% accuracy.

OUTCOME 3: Develop into well-rounded global citizens by demonstrating an appreciation for Japanese culture and developing the academic and professional skills necessary to succeed in a globalized world with 70% accuracy.
