CART - Communication Access Realtime Translation Certificate

The CART - Communication Access Realtime Translation Certificate will provide the student with an opportunity for future employment as a classroom captionist shadowing a hearing-impaired individual, providing a realtime translation of all proceedings. The training program provides for an internship experience, where students will learn first-hand the job duties of a CART reporter. To earn a certificate, complete the required courses as listed with a grade of C or better. At least 50% of all course work must be completed at Cypress College. STUDENTS MUST FURNISH THEIR OWN MACHINE AND PAPER. This certificate requires a total of 25.5 units

Program Student Learning Outcomes:

OUTCOME 1: Acquire the necessary skills to work with a hearing-impaired individual providing realtime translation and feedback in seminars, classrooms, meetings, and large scale venues. The certificate focuses on accuracy and speed building emphasizing a variety of writing skillsets in legal, literary, and medical terminology, along with realtime training and vocabulary development for application to keyboard outlines. The development of these skills is necessary to provide the basis for employment as a CART reporter.
